A WOMAN had to be cut free from a car after a collision on a housing estate.

The 42-year-old was a passenger in the Ford Mondeo being driven by her husband when it was involved in a collision at a junction in Garland Terrace, Fencehouses, at around 6pm yesterday.

Firefighters from Rainton Bridge used cutting equipment to remove the roof of the car.

She was then helped on to a spinal board after she said she was suffering from back pain.

She was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital, with her injuries not thought to be serious.

The woman driving the other car, a Honda Civic, and the Mondeo driver were unhurt in the smash.

The road was closed off while the rescue was carried out and debris cleared.
