Woman suffers 'serious injuries' in Sunderland road accident

A woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a road accident in Sunderland this afternoon.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision at approximately 4.35pm, in which the pedestrian was hit by a Nissan Qashqai in Tempest Street, Silksworth, beside Coral Bookmakers.

The 33-year-old woman was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious injuries. The road remains closed while the scene is examined with local diversions in place.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses to call police on 101, quoting reference number 727 of 08/03/17.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said a cardiac arrest response car had been dispatched then the woman was taken straight to the major trauma unit at the RVI in Newcastle.

Luke Tebbutt, who sent us this picture, described seeing a 'huge police presence on Silksworth Terrace.'

"There seems to have been a one car RTA, involving a pedestrian on the zebra crossing," he said.

"A collision investigation unit is here along with eight other police vehicles."
