Woman sexually assaulted in Sunderland - can you help police?

Police have launched an appeal for information after a sexual assault in Sunderland.

The incident happened in Newbold Avenue, in Monkwearmouth, at about 2.20am on Sunday.

Police say a woman was sexually assaulted.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "It's believed the victim and offender had walked from Newbold Avenue to the cashpoint at Thompson Road before walking back to Newbold Avenue before the assault took place.

"Inquiries are ongoing into the incident and police are appealing for witnesses.

"Extra officers are on patrol to offer reassurance to local residents."

Detective Inspector Dave Cole said: "If anyone has any information that can help with our inquiries then we would ask them to come forward and speak to us."
