Emergency crews were called to rescue a woman who was sitting on Wearmouth Bridge in the early hours of this morning.

Police, firefighters and the RNLI, Royal National Lifeboat Institution, were called to the site at 3.15am where the woman had climbed over the railings and was sitting on the bridge.

Paul Nicholson, a spokesman for Sunderland RNLI, said she was eventually brought down to safety at about 4.30am.

He said: “Police were talking to her for a good hour and she finally agreed to be helped to safety by the firefighters’ rope rescue team.”
