A woman had to be freed from her car after it was hit by a lorry and flipped on its roof.
Firecrews had to help the driver free after her Peugeot 207 clipped a lorry when it pulled into her lane on the Chester Road roundabout at its junction with the A19.
A crew from North Moor and Washington attended the scene at 5.25 last night to find the driver’s head had become wedged.
Two children and a man were also travelling in the car, but had managed to get out before crews arrived.
There were rush hour tailbacks as crews and paramedics treated the woman at the scene and adjusted the driver’s seat to free her.
She was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for a precautionary measure where her injuries are not thought to be serious.
