Woman is cut free from car

A DRIVER had to be cut free from her car after a smash.

The woman suffered suspected spinal injures after two cars collided in Queen Alexandra Road, Ashbrooke, Sunderland.

Firefighters were called to the scene and used specialist cutting equipment to free the woman, who was in her early 40s, from her VW Passat.

She was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital by paramedics who were also called to the scene.

A man, who was driving a Ford Ka managed to free himself before emergency services arrived.

He did not suffer any injuries.

Two crews from North Moor fire station dealt with the incident while police closed off the road for about 45 minutes.

The accident took place just after 6.30pm on Friday.
