Woman arrested after Sunderland flat fire

A WOMAN has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire in Sunderland yesterday.

Firefighters from Sunderland Central, Farringdon and Fulwell attended the blaze in an upstairs flat in Hudson Road, Hendon, shortly after 5.40pm.

A 19-year-old woman, who had escaped from the property before fire crews arrived, was given oxygen therapy until paramedics arrived, then taken by ambulance to hospital.

Her condition is not believed to life-threatening.

A bedroom was severely damaged by fire and smoke and the rest of the flat by smoke.

Enquiries are being carried out to establish the cause of the fire, however, it is believed to have been started deliberately.
