Police, fire fighters, the Great North Air Ambulance, road ambulances and and coastguards were called out to the cliffs, near to the Marsden Grotto pub this morning.

A woman has been flown to Newcastle's RVI Hospital in a critical condition for treatment in the major trauma unit.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "At 11.39am, we were called to attend Marsden cliffs in conjunction with police and the fire service.

"We sent a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and also had an ambulance crew and an air response unit.

"The woman was transferred by air to the major trauma unit of Newcastle's RVI Hospital."

A spokesman from the Coastguard confirmed earlier: "Sunderland Coastguard and South Shields volunteers are assisting police with an incident and are on scene now."

A passer-by, who did not wish to be named, said he saw four coastguard crews, three fire engines, and four police cars at the scene.
