A Durham woman has died after the car she was travelling in collided with a gate post.

The 61-year-old named by police as Audrey Elliott was the passenger in an Audi A6 car when it left the road and collided with a concrete gate post.

She was taken to the James Cook Hospital by air ambulance but died from her injuries.

The accident happened at 5.35pm on Friday on the A688 Barford Corner between Staindrop and Barnard Castle.
