THE North East is braced for a wintry weekend with sleet, snow and gales of up to 50mph set to hit the region.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for sleet and snow that will spread east on Sunday before turning back into rain.
Snow is expected to lay on higher ground with accumulations of up to 5cm in places.
With it will come gusts of up to 50mph along the coast and high ground, which forecasters say could cause blizzard conditions on some roads.
A Met Office spokesman said: “The public should be aware of difficult driving conditions and the risk of disruption to transport.
“An Atlantic frontal system will meet colder air over northern parts of the UK, bringing snow for a time. Whilst much of this will turn back to rain, routes above about 200m in northern Scotland and about 300m in northern England will have a prolonged spell of snow, which will drift in the strong winds.”
