Wineathlon race to bring fun to Durham

The Wineathlon run, which will come to Durham in October, gives participants an extra incentive to get to the finish line with various wine tasting spots around the course.

In total, six locations around the UK will host a race this year, with the season ending in the North East. The events are designed to "put the fun back into running".

Amateur athletes and seasoned runners alike are being invited to run, walk or crawl along the "easy rail" which will have stops dotted around the route, each representing a different wine region of the world.

The drinking stations will be around two miles apart, with bottles of wine available to purchase at the end of the course.

The Durham event costs £18 to enter, and has a capacity of 400 people.

This year's events will begin in Conwy in North Wales, at the end of August, moving to Cambridge, Worcester and Yorkshire in September.

"Wineathletes" in Glasgow will then get the chance to race through their city on September 24 before the season ends on October 1.

Wane Law, managing director of organiser TeamOA, said: "The idea is just to put the fun back into running. It's getting people out, crossing the finishing line.

"People have taken it on themselves, and it's turned into an event rather than a race."
