THE wife of canoe man John Darwin is expected to be released from prison today.

Anne Darwin, who claimed £250,000 from insurance and pension schemes after her husband’s staged death, is due to be freed from Askham Grange jail, near York.

The 59-year-old will have served a three-year sentence for her role in the scam, and will stay on licence for three years.

Her ex-prison officer husband, 60, was released on licence from Moorland open prison in Doncaster, in January, after serving half of his six-year sentence.

The couple, from Seaton Carew, gained notoriety when he turned up at a police station claiming to be missing and suffering from amnesia.

His scam included stealing the identity of dead Sunderland baby John Jones, which has left the youngster’s remaining siblings demanding answers from the Darwins.
