Who is Jack Baldwin? The 'young Alan Hansen' set to join Sunderland from Peterborough

The 25-year-old is set to undergo a medical on Wearside today ahead of a move to the Stadium of Light in a deal believed to be worth around £200,000.

And while he may be a familiar name to some - especially given the continued speculation over a move to Sunderland this summer - plenty may be unfamiliar with the man looking set to become Jack Ross' latest signing.

Where has he played?

Baldwin has enjoyed something of a varied career, having started in non-league at Faversham Town.

But his potential was spotted and, aged just 18, he was snapped up by Hartlepool United having already been eyed by Gillingham.

He quickly impressed at Victoria Park, stepping into the first-team squad while still a teenager and going on to cement a starting place.

The centre back excelled in League One with Pools and his fine form attracted interest, prompting Peterborough to launch a £500,000 bid for his services.

Baldwin made the move to London Road in January 2014 and has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the Posh, while netting five times.

Having previously held the armband on occasion, the centre back was made club captain ahead of the 2017/18 campaign and featured regularly last season.

What type of player is he?

Described as a 'young Alan Hansen' by Neale Cooper, his former manager at Hartlepool United, Baldwin certainly falls under the category of a 'cultured' centre back.

While typically strong in the air and tough in the tackle, Baldwin also brings plenty of composure to the backline.

That too was praised by Cooper, who told BBC Sport in 2014: "He makes time for himself. It's a position I played in, and the way he reads the game, everything he did, headers, clearances, everything looked composed."

His ability to read the game and pick pockets of defenders has long been praised, and Baldwin is more than comfortable playing out from the back.

While primarily a centre back he is versatile, too. Previous clubs have utilised the 25-year-old as a right-back or defensive midfielder if required, and this could be something for Ross to consider.

How will he fit into Jack Ross' side?

The Black Cats' boss wants to play attractive football, and centre halves that are capable of passing it out from the back are key to that.

Baldwin's calmness and composure will be key to that style of football and ensuring that Sunderland aren't just pumping the ball away.

His experience of League One will be useful as well, and he's far from the first player to join the club who is well-versed in third tier football.

Ross is keen to recruit proven quantities, and the addition of Baldwin fits that bill.

On paper he seems to be a fine new recruit - but let's hope he can back that up on the pitch.
