Thousands of us pass along city streets without giving their names a second thought.

Yet who are the people or places our addresses, pubs and buildings pay tribute to?

The question has raised its head this week after approach roads either side of the new Northern Spire bridge were named in honour of former council leader Paul Watson and ex-Sunderland football chairman Tom Cowie.

The Black Cats, of course, are the inspiration behind a host of names such as Shackleton House and the former Colonel Prior pub.
