A kids fun-fest takes place each Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm to 4pm, including today until Thursday, August 25, in South Shields Amphitheatre (behind Minchella’s ice cream shop on South Shields seafront). Each afternoon will be full of fun, games and activities featuring a host of amazing performers and entertainers with the welcome return of the gunge tank. South Tyneside Council runs summer holiday sports coaching programmes and family fun days throughout this month in various venues. Some events must be booked and paid for in advance but many are free. Coaching places are limited so early booking is recommended. Gladstone will be playing on Saturday in the Victorian Bandstand in South Marine Park from 2pm to 4pm. This is a free weekly event with a different group every week until September 3, sponsored by the Friends of North and South Marine Park.
Brass bands play in the Amphitheatre each Sunday from 2pm to 4pm until August 21. This Sunday’s band is Dunston Silver Band.
Slimming World is held in the Barnes Institute every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9pm. The consultant is Janet and she can be contacted on 07984 629 749.
Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open daily from 11am to 5pm. This Thursday until Sunday from 11am to 4pm, life-sized models of marine mammals, including whales and dolphins, take over the Foghorn Field for a four-day roadshow event. This is a free event but there may be a small charge for some activities. Dogs on leads are welcome.
On Sunday from 12.30pm to 2.30pm, join a Souter Ranger for a Seashore Safari, cost £1 per child. Discover salty sea creatures galore, learn how to tell winkles from whelks and even more watery wildlife facts. The ramble is suitable for children of all ages, accompanied by an adult, and dogs on leads are welcome. Please wear appropriate clothing for the weather, footwear suitable for slippery surfaces and meet in the Foghorn Field. Nets and buckets can be provided but please feel free to bring your own. Coffee mornings take place every Saturday morning in Whitburn Methodist Church hall and Churches Together Lunch Club is on Thursdays from noon to 1.30pm. Soup, sandwiches, salad, sweet, unlimited tea or coffee and stimulating conversation are available for £3 and all are welcome. Regular free activities at Whitburn Library include Baby Bounce – gentle knee bouncing, finger and action rhymes for babies on Mondays from 10am to 10.30am, Library Storytots – stories, crafts and songs for pre-school children on Tuesdays from 2.30 to 3.30pm and on Thursdays, Mat Making from 10.30am to noon and friendly Knit and Natter from 1.30 to 3.30pm.
