Ernest Naylor, 94, from Whitburn, a Normandy veteran, has been honoured by the government of France.
Twenty-one veterans were presented with the Legion d’Honneur by a representative of the French government at a ceremony held at The Yorkshire Air Museum.
Ernest attended the ceremony with 14 members of his family and friends, including his daughter, four of his grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
South Bents Townswomen’s Guild will support Sunderland Federation coffee morning tomorrow at 10am in St Mary’s Church hall, Bridge Street.
Next Wednesday, Mrs Brenda Graham will give a talk entitled “Duchess of Cambridge, Northern Ancestors” at 7pm in Whitburn Methodist Church hall.
A Townswomen’s holiday to Wales takes place from next Wednesday to Sunday.

During Lent, parishioners donated to the work of Livability which helps people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. A total of £455 was collected.
Whitburn Village Summer Festival starts with the annual picnic on the Village Green on Sunday, from on onwards.
Bring family, friends, food, drink, tables, chairs, rugs, gazebos etc. and join the fun.
There will be live music from Cats Night Out from 1pm, and a free bouncy castle for children.
There are leaflets in the village shops, the Barnes Institute and the library.
During school half-term Souter Lighthouse, the gift shop and tea room are open daily from 11am to 5pm.
From today until Friday there will be craft activities for children aged three years up, from 11am to 4pm, cost £3 per craft.
Booking is not necessary.
On Sunday, from 9.3am to 11.30am, join a Souter Ranger for a Rockpool Ramble, cost £1 per child.
The ramble is suitable for children of all ages accompanied by an adult, and dogs on leads are welcome.
Wear appropriate clothing for the weather, footwear suitable for slippery surfaces and meet in the Foghorn Field.
Nets and buckets can be provided, but please feel free to bring your own.

Creative workshops The Somme Remembered are taking place at Whitburn Methodist Church from 10am to noon, from today.
They continue on June 14, 21, 28 and July 5.

On Sunday, there will be a Craft Market with a wide selection of stalls at Harton Quays Park, South Shields, from 10.30am to 3pm.
