South Bents Townswomen’s Guild meets tomorrow for the start of the new programme at 7pm in Whitburn Methodist Church hall, when Colin Orr will give a talk entitled Famous Quotations.

Ladies will be exhibiting their skills in the craft, home-craft and floral arrangement sections at The Seaburn Show held in the Seaburn Centre and open to the public on Saturday and Sunday, September 19 and 20.

Souter Lighthouse, including the tearoom and gift shop, is open daily except Fridays from 11am to 5pm this month.

Create recommences after the summer holidays on Thursday in the Barnes Institute. It is an innovative club which focuses on confidence building for children through fun, drama, dance and singing, enabling them to celebrate their individuality. The class for pre-school and reception is from 4pm to 4.45pm, for KS1 and 2 up to eight years from 5pm to 6pm and for older KS2, from 6pm to 7pm. Taster sessions are free. The new programme of Cultural Spring workshops for the autumn is available now in the Barnes Institute, the library and the parish church hall. Starting on Tuesday, September 22, from 7pm to 8.30pm, the fun and friendly singing group, Singing with Music in the Minster, will meet for 10 weeks in the Barnes Institute. All ages and abilities are welcome and there is no need to be able to read music. A voluntary contribution of £2 per session will be welcomed.

A Craft Fair will be held in Whitburn Methodist Church hall, North Guards, on Saturday, October 3, from 1pm to 4pm. Tables at £5 are limited and all proceeds will be donated to the Church. Crafters who specialise in sewing, knitting, jewellery, art, soap and candle-making will be most welcome. The annual Whitburn Proms, featuring the Bede Wind Philharmonic Orchestra and Bede Chorus, conducted by Ernest Young, take place on Friday, October 2, at 7.30pm in Whitburn Parish Church. Tickets for this popular event costing £8 are available from Jean Atkinson on 529 3574 and Ernie Tweddell on 529 2576. Patriotic flags to wave are provided and a complimentary glass of wine or soft drink will be served during the interval.

Regular free activities at Whitburn Library include Baby Bounce, gentle knee bouncing, finger and action rhymes for babies on Mondays from 10am to 10.30am, Storytots, stories, crafts and songs for pre-school children on Tuesdays from 2.30 to 3.30pm and on Thursdays, Mat Making from 10.30am to noon and friendly Knit and Natter from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
