Whitburn Bowling Club needed a new water heater and turned to Whitburn and Marsden councillors Tracey Dixon, Peter Boyack and Joyce Welsh for help.

The councillors asked South Tyneside Council to provide a cost for the work - £1,000 - and they managed to secured the cash from the East Shields and Whitburn Community Area Forum funding.

The new water heater will allow the club to have hot water in its wash rooms for members and guests.

Coun Dixon said: “We are all delighted that the work to install the water heater has been carried out.

“The club has lots of local members and visitors from other club around the country, and we’re pleased for them that their facilities have been improved.

“It is a popular club and, hopefully, people will be able to enjoy it even more.”

The club, based in Cornthwaite Park, is a meeting place for people of all ages in the community.

Derek Wilson, treasurer and secretary of the club, said: “On behalf of the members of Whitburn bowling club I’d like to say a big thank you to the Whitburn and Marsden ward councillors for their support.

“Since the club was built there has been no hot water apart from in the kitchen.

“The addition of the new water heater is great for when we host competitions and entertain other clubs as they can now make full use of our wash rooms in between games.”
