A tall ship’s crew arrived in the North East and had a question for locals: “Where’s Angie from Hartlepool?”

After a voyage from Stavanger in Norway, the class B vessel Wyvern arrived at Hudson Dock in Sunderland.

But the only question on the lips of the crewmates was ‘where’s the lovely liaison officer from Hartlepool who we met in 2010.”

The Wyvern, which has a 12-strong crew, last made a visit to the North East of England when she took part in the Hartlepool leg of The Tall Ships Races eight years ago.

During her stay back then, the ship’s crew were looked after by a liaison officer who was called Angie - and she was wonderful, said sail trainee Arne Magnus Sortland who is now embarking on his fourth tall ship adventure. He was one of those who met Angie in 2010.

He added: “She was awesome in every way she could be. She invited her whole family to come and see us. She organised everything the crew needed to remember Hartlepool in a wonderful way.

“And on the last day, she even got all the other liaison officers to say goodbye to us. They all did a large wave all along the quay,” he added.

“We would would like to know if she is going to come down and see us in Sunderland as we are going to greet her and say hello, and give her something to drink.”

To help trace Angie, a big poster has been put up on the side of the ship saying “where is Angie from Hartlepool?”

The Wyvern was launched in 1897 and sailed under the German flag until after the First World War. She was later owned by a British couple who sailed her for 27 years until 1973. She now races under the ownership of the Stavanger Maritime Museum.

Her stay in Sunderland started on Sunday but her crew had a wonderful time while they were waiting to come into port. “From Saturday evening, we have had silky smooth sailing all the way,” said Arne. “Calm oceans and we even took a bath in the North Sea on Saturday night.”

Visitprs to Sunderland’s Tall Ships Races leg can see Wyvern in the Hudson Dock at Port of Sunderland. She is one of more than 50 ships which are set to grace Wearside until Saturday.
