Where are the elderly?

In recent weeks, I have seen sepia photos of refugees from The American Civil War, film footage of refugees fleeing the Kaiser's forces in Belgium in 1914 and of refugees from Hitler's hordes in 1940.

They have much in common. These war-weary, suffering individuals were made up of women, children and old people. There were also some men.

Many of the films and photos of refugees today show a huge preponderance of young men. Surely, these valiant individuals have not left their old and vulnerable behind, have they?
