"Legal rape" group Return of Kings, led by American "pick-up artist" Roosh V, will meet across the UK on Saturday - and they are encouraging "like-minded" heterosexual men to join them.

The announcement from the neomasculinist group sparked anger in both men and women across the region and country - with thousands calling for the events to be stopped in all locations.

On our Facebook page, Karen Roberts said: "Any decent bloke who has respect for women wouldn't even think about this horrible act.

"Women will not put up with this behaviour from men any more. Rape is rape. This bloke is on a very slippery slope if he carries on with his stupid comments."

Keith Brassell called on the UK Government to step in, and added: "Who the hell does he think he is?

"This is the problem, kick him out of our country we do not need idiots like this in the UK."

Others hailed Roosh V as "scum" and demanded that he be locked up as a matter of urgency.

Since the announcement of the UK meetings, and the wide response of hatred, the Return of Kings website has been updated warning followers of potential protests in certain locations on Saturday.

The addresses of some meeting places have now been removed, and replaced with email addresses instead.

Reader Louise Angel commented on our social media, and said: "Police should keep a close eye on who attends, and make note of their names."

Diane Taylor added: "How come if you incite violence on [Facebook] you can get locked up but this man is allowed in our country to incite rape in any context."

The North East event is due to take place in Newcastle upon Tyne, with supporters encouraged to meet at 8pm at the city's Grey's Monument.

Northumbria Police has issued a statement reassuring the public that they agree the group's behaviour is "abhorrent".

The police continued: "Our view, along with every other reasonable person, is that everything this group stands for is abhorrent and there is no place for it in our city.

"We will have extra officers on patrol in the area around Grey's Monument on Saturday evening to reassure members of the public and monitor what, if any, activity takes place.

"We will deal with any incidents swiftly and will not tolerate any acts that incite or encourage individuals to commit criminal offences.

"Newcastle is a safe, diverse and welcoming city and we will not allow the actions of a very small minority to jeopardise this."

Meetings are also taking place across the United States, in Dubai and across Europe.
