WAVES crash over the lighthouse at Seaham as the wet and windy weather continued to batter the region.

Gale force winds and heavy rain hit Wearside and East Durham over the weekend.

With some roads suffering flooding, police and the emergency services have called for motorists to err on the side of caution while driving in the difficult conditions.

Tomorrow, clearer skies are expected, with temperature highs of 10˚C (50˚F).

But forecasters say that Wednesday will see a return of rain, with a strong chance of heavy showers.

Brighter and sunnier spells are predicted by the end of the week.
