DeAndre Yedlin: Saw more of the ball second half but wasn't much of a threat down the right. Did pull ball back for Rodwell's saved shot. Worked hard defensively.....6

Patrick van Aanholt: It was his mistake for the opening goal, poor clearance initially and then Antonio ghosted past him like he wasn't there....5

Lee Cattermole: Played in a more advanced midfield role. Defensively he was solid, played some nice through balls but not creative enough. Subbed.....6

Yann M’Vila: Sunderland struggled to maintain possession in midfield. First half M'Vila struggled to impose himself, with Sunderland lacking creativity....6

Wahbi Khazri: Kept swapping wings with N'Doye. Showed flashes first half, hit the crossbar with one free-kick. Showboating late on was poor judgement. Not his day, really....6

Dame N’Doye: Poor from N'Doye. Struggled to maintain possession or find a teammate with a pass. As a result Defoe was stranded up front. Looks better in central role..5

Jermain Defoe: Was feeding off scraps in first half, playing up front by himself. Missed a glorious chance early second half.....6

Subs:Jack Rodwell (for Cattermole, 65): Had two excellent chances to equalise, first saved by Adrian, second blocked by Byram. Should have scored....6
