Jordan Pickford: Couple of good strong early interventions and highly alert in second half when called upon. Unsighted for goal, surely a case of offside for man in front of him? 7

Javier Manquillo: Got forward nicely down the right, almost got in from a neat Ndong ball in first half. 6

John O'Shea: Held the defence together well, no dramas from the veteran centre-half. 6

Lamine Kone: Almost caught out by Zaza early in second half but that apart, solid as a rock. 6

Patrick van Aanholt: Unsteady start but at the heart of Sunderland's best moves though could not make use of a good free-kick opportunity. Very good at the back in second half. 7Jack Rodwell: Headed over from a Wahbi Khazri free-kick and needless booking in first half though pulled off a fine tackle on Payet late on when French star threatened. 6

Didier Ndong: Unlucky to be booked for a 'foul' on Payat and played Sunderland's pass of first half to Manquillo. Plenty of running. 6

Steven Pienaar: Brought back into starting XI and was part of a battling effort in the middle of the park. 6

Duncan Watmore: A lot of running but little in the way of end product. One nice bit of defensive cover on sub Feghouli. Subbed. 5

Jermain Defoe: Eastend boy booed, despite 41 goals in 105 appearances for Hammers. He had one dangerous first half run though with a weak shot at end of it and fired over in second half. 6

Wahbi Khazri: Could not capitalise on an early second half chance which Adrian saved. Tried audacious shot from his own half with no joy. 6
