Second half strikes from Gareth Evans, Ronan Curtis and Ben Thompson wrapped up a 3-1 triumph for the League One leaders, with Luke O'Nien's well-taken effort proving to be just a consolation goal.

The Black Cats also ended the game with ten men after Glenn Loovens was shown red on what was a disappointing afternoon at Fratton Park.

But fans refused to be too downbeat about the result - here's how they reacted on social media:

@JoeDB_ tweeted: "2 games in hand on Luton and Pompey. Have to play them both at HOME (where, if some fickle fans have forgotten, we’re unbeaten in the league). Wyke, Hume, Flanagan, Matthews all still to come back. Stop having a meltdown, we’re still winning this league"

@tongey93 commented: "Fantastic unbeaten run comes to an end. Even game until the red card. @LukeONien absolutely fantastic today. Long way to go, hopefully a good response Wednesday against Bradford"

@DanielJenks89 said: "A bad day at the office. First league defeat in 14 weeks, so no need to panic"

@76skelly added: "Well, it wasn’t to be. The 1st half was 2 average teams. The red card killed us but fair play to Portsmouth for making it count."

@JamesCopley73 posted: "That was a big game. #SAFC lost. However, there’s a long way to go this season and we have two games in hand. Fans shouldn’t be too worried."

@RamseySAFC argued: "People have been saying for weeks after wins, that we are bang average and are getting lucky."

@peterjames73 commented: "Not even that disappointed about the result. Always going to get setbacks throughout the season. Given the major overhaul Ross & co had in the summer, I think we’ve had a very good start to the season. Just imperative we strengthen in the right areas in January"

@rosstaylor1977 said: "Behave Sunderland fans we lost so if they best team why worry the chairman did not expect us to be where we are so in good hands let’s relax enjoy the ride if we do go up happy days if not we win league next year and it’s only half time with a window and money"

@rackysafc tweeted: "We go again on Boxing Day! Thought we were marginally the better side in the first half! Sending off changed the game. What did impress me is they didn't give up even in the closing minutes. 2 home games now, let's get 6 points and crank this season up!"

@Buntingfootball posted: "Loovens sending off the difference today a draw even would have been great but it isn’t to be Portsmouth will slip up to plenty of games to go"

@Ian_Crow3 added: "Humbled by top @officialpompey side. Mix of poor team selection, poor showing, Loovens stupid red, then a collapse. Apparent in Jan need for big strong CB who can deal with set-peices. But need better in packed boxing day against Bradford"
