POLITICIANS have welcomed news that 44,900 homes and businesses are to benefit from super-fast broadband.
Telecommunications giant BT has announced that Ryhope, Washington and Sunderland North are included in its £2.5billion roll-out of fibre broadband, to be completed by autumn next year.
Download and upstream speeds could be doubled.
“This is fantastic news for everyone associated with the city of Sunderland,” said Sunderland Central MP Julie Elliott.
“It is particularly important for businesses, as up-to-date technologies ensure they are able to compete with modern economies around the world.
“This investment by BT is recognition that Sunderland is becoming a future hub of technological and software advancements, and the roll-out of super fast broadband will promote this further.”
Washington and Sunderland MP Sharon Hodgson said: “This is a great development for Washington and Sunderland, both for businesses and residents.
“Access to high speed internet is crucial for our local businesses to be competitive in an increasing globalised world.
“I know that many of my constituents will be very happy to know that they now have the option of faster internet in their homes.”
