IT wasn’t just fun in the sun for Sunderland’s Kevin McLernon when millions of TV viewers saw him battling the bulge in Florida.
Last night’s episode of The Biggest Loser UK saw the contestants, including Kevin, of Seaburn Dene, jet off to America as part of their massive weight loss challenge.
Kevin, 38, managed to win through another gruelling week to keep his place in the fat-fighting house, but he said the trip to America was certainly no holiday.
The property developer told the Echo: “I had been to Florida twice before, so was really excited when they said we would be going, but it wasn’t a holiday.
“We went to Cocoa Beach, which was beautiful, but not when you are training. The heat was so intense and the sand was sticking to the suntan lotion. I also had a small injury from the week before, so all in all it wasn’t a great day for me at the beach.”
The challenge for the contestants, including Kevin’s niece, Amy McLernon, 23, from South Shields, who entered the contest with him, was to put as many American footballs as they could in the opposition teams’ baskets, with the white team losing the challenge and gaining a 2lb disadvantage.
Contestants also had to face an American food challenge, trying to calculate how many calories were in the fat-laden foods, such as peanut butter milkshake and huge burgers, with Kevin’s blue team winning the challenge and getting a 1lb advantage.
He said: “Before the Biggest Loser, I would have thought all the food looked fantastic, but I just thought it looked like junk.”
The white team went on to lose the weigh-in and it was Tamara who was sent home.
Kevin, who lives in Dovedale Road, with his partner, Joanne, said, although he struggled being in Florida and out of his usual fat-fighting routine in the Biggest Loser house, there were some highlights to the trip, including being given a VIP day at Universal Studios.
Weighing 32st 2lb when he started the Biggest Loser, Kevin was the ITV show’s heaviest-ever competitor, but he is vowing never to go back to the way he was and has already lost more than 5st.
