Flood Warning issued for the coast at Sunderland

A flood warning has been put in force by the Environment Agency for the Tyne and Wear coast that flooding is expected in parts of Sunderland, on the evening of Monday, January 13.

A Flood Warning has been issued for the Tyne and Wear coast by the Environment Agency which was updated at 2.46pm from a Flood Alert issued at 1.27pm.

The previous alert warned that waves are forecast to overtop sea defences with sea spray expected on the Tyne and Wear coast as a result of high spring tides and strong winds.

Tides will be at their highest between 4.15pm and 6.30pm on Monday, January 13 and conditions may apply two to four hours either side of the high tide.

Flooding to coastal footpaths and roads is possible during this time.

Areas at risk of flooding are beaches, promenades, coastal footpaths and roads. But properties most at risk include the Amusement Arcades and Grannie Annies at Roker and the Flood Alert for Seaham Harbour and docks is still in force.

People are being advised to avoid areas of risk and to take care near the coast.

Tides forecast for the morning of Tuesday, January 14 are not expected to require an alert, however the Environment Agency expected an alert will be issued Tuesday evening.

The Environment Agency advises to be prepared and to keep your staff and customers informed about the situation if you’re a business owner, move cars or other vehicles to higher ground, and check that you know how to turn off your gas, electricity and water mains supplies.
