Wearside League: Turton sinks champions to keep West End battling for second place

Sunderland West End kept alive their hopes of finishing runners-up in the TWR Bi Folds Wearside League when they defeated champions Stockton Town 2-1 on Saturday.

A second-half brace by Barry Turton saw off the Ebac Northern League-bound Teessiders, who suffered only a third defeat in 37 games.

The win keeps West End in third spot, four points behind Redcar Athletic with two games in hand.

The picture may become a little clearer tonight when Redcar sign off at Harton and Westoe, while the Wearsiders go to Hartlepool. Anth Nelson’s side have their last two games at Wolviston on Wednesday and at home to Ashbrooke Belford House next Monday.

Annfield Plain – once a hot-bed for local football in the old North Eastern League days – end third from bottom after suffering a last-day 4-1 defeat at home to Jarrow.

Lee Brand, Paul Burrell, Paul Trosh and Grant Pressling struck for the South Tynesiders, with Kasey Glendenning credited with the Plain’s only success.

Annfield goalkeeper Craig Stacey suffered a dislocated finger after 30 minutes and was replaced by outfield player Paul Middleton.

Cleator Moor Celtic finish fourth-top despite crashing to a 3-0 defeat at Richmond Town, for whom Mark Sims (2) and Ben Darville found the net.

Wolviston are fourth from the basement, but, with three games to play, could leap-frog Leam Rangers. The Metcalfe Park side saved their best performance of the season for Whitehaven, whom they crushed 5-0.

Karl Barry, with a superb direct free-kick, gave them a perfect start and Andrew McGirr doubled the lead.

There was a further setback for the Cumbrians when captain Kevin Holliday was shown a straight red card on 70 minutes.

Wolviston took advantage and mounted a grandstand finish which was rewarded with further goals by McGirr, Nathan Summersgill and Ryan Brown.
