Anth Nelson’s men took another step towards second spot by defeating Wolviston 2-1 at Metcalfe Park last night.

The Wearsiders were by far the better side, but it took them until the 37th minute for Barry Turton to break the deadlock as he chipped goalkeeper Tom Laverick, who made numerous outstanding saves throughout the 90 minutes.

It was a surprise when the home side levelled on the hour mark, with Andrew McGirr’s close-range effort finding the net despite the desperate efforts of a defender on the line to clear the ball.

With the clock ticking down, a draw looked on the cards, but David Keithley came up trumps with a powerful header from a Jamie Fryatt cross and West End held onto their narrow lead for a fully deserved three points.

Now, it’s all down to the local derby on Monday (7.30pm).

Originally, Ashbrooke hammered their neighbours 6-2 but the game was ordered to be replayed because they fielded an ineligible player.
