Wearside charity wants the coat off your back this Christmas

Have your say

UNWANTED coats of all shapes and sizes are needed for a new Salvation Army campaign.

People on Wearside are being asked to support the Donate a Coat appeal, which is running this week until Friday.

Over the five days of the appeal, which is being run with ITV show Daybreak, people are being asked to donate new or nearly-new coats in good condition to The Salvation Army for distribution to homeless people, families in poverty and older people struggling to keep warm this winter.

Major Darrell Thomas, leader of The Salvation Army’s Northern Division, said: “Donate a Coat is a fantastic opportunity to encourage community spirit across the nation and help people living on low incomes who struggle to afford adequate clothing.

“It’s a very practical response to the cold winter weather ahead and we will be working alongside a number of agencies to identify individuals and families who would benefit from an extra warm layer this winter.”

Wearsiders can take donations to Southwick Community Project, Austin House Family Centre, Shakespeare Street, Sunderland, or Sanctuary 21, 49 Saddler Street, in Durham, between 9am-5pm.
