Although she is banned from talking in detail about her progress on the BBC1 show, she was able to share some of the lessons she has learned for her time with Lord Sugar.

“I think what I have really learned is that anything is possible if you put your mind to it and you put yourself out there,” said Katie, 28.

“That would be my message to the students - that there is nothing they can’t do.”

Katie has been overwhelmed with the response to her time on the show.

“The support I have had in Sunderland is tremendous,” she said.

“People I have never met before, people I haven’t seen for years, everyone has been lovely.

“I have even had people jumping out at me in Lidl to say good luck.

“It has been really, really nice.”

Katie, a BSc Sports and Exercise Development graduate, is one of the country’s most successful fitness trainers and, through her website, has clients around the world.

She produces her own DVDs and is the face of fitness for high street giant Argos.

“Today is about me sharing my experiences of business, telling them my story of how I got started, and hopefully they can incorporate some of the things they learn into their own businesses to make them even more successful.”

Vince Robson, of the university’s business school, was delighted to welcome Katie back to the classroom.

“I hope she will be able to inspire the students by talking about her business journey,” he said.

“Katie is one of our own graduates who has done so well. We want them to listen to what she has to say and take those lessons into their own entrepreneurial journey.”

*Katie will be back in The Apprentice on BBC1 at 9pm tonight, when the teams are challenged to devise a marketing campaign for a new soft drink.
