This lucky hedgehog has a Sunderland taxi driver to thank for his life after he found himself with a sweet bag stuck on his head in the middle of a dark road.
The spiky creature - dubbed ‘Harry’ - was crossing the road in the early hours of Tuesday when eagle-eyed Dean Matthews spotted his desperate plight.
Dean, 37, had just dropped off a fare in Ryhope, when he saw the hedgehog in the road in front of his taxi, at 3am.
He captured the rescue on his mobile phone.
“It was walking around in circles with a sweet bag stuck on its face,” Dean said. “It became a bit distressed when it heard the car, because it couldn’t see where it was going.
“I just stopped the car and pulled the bag off its face and it ran to the wall and disappeared.
“It was awful to see, because it was so distressed, and I didn’t know how long it had been there.”
Dean says there is no excuse to throw litter that could harm animals.
“It does really make me angry,” he added. “It only takes two seconds to take it home with you or to find a bin.
“People need to remember that there is wildlife in the city as well.”
