Fletcher, signed on loan from the Black Cats until the end of the season, produced a clever lay-off to set up Romain Alessandrini on the edge of the penalty area after 33 minutes to settle the Ligue 1 side, who had to rely on a superb early save from Steve Mandanda to prevent Ricardo Sophie putting the fourth-tier Bordeaux-based hosts ahead.

After heading over and then shooting just wide in the second half, Scotland striker Fletcher made sure there would be no late drama when he stabbed in a right-wing cross from Abdelaziz Barrada – his first goal for the French giants.

That sealed a quarter-final place against another minnow outfit, US Granville.

Meanwhile, former Sunderland goalkeeper Keiren Westwood is fit to play for Sheffield Wednesday against Brentford tomorrow, despite being stretchered off with a neck injury in last week’s game at Birmingham.

“He has trained this week and will be okay for Saturday,” boss Carlos Carvalhal said.
