Watch manager Don McAneny said drains to the front and rear of the two-storey - ground floor and basement - flats in Ashbrook Terrace, Ashbrooke Road, had been blocked.

"I think it is literally down to the volume of water that has come down," he said.

"We have had a couple of blocked drains, which have not helped."

Melissa Gunn, 25, lives in one of the flats with flatmate Ashleigh Judd.

The flat had initially flooded on Christmas Day, said Melissa: "My flatmate came back yesterday (Boxing Day) and saw the mess," she said.

"The estate agents were really good – as soon as Ashleigh rang them, they came out and helped her move everything.

"I was in the pub, none the wiser. They are going to move us somewhere else."

The flooding also affected electrical supplies to a small number of customers in the area, including St John’s Methodist Church.Northern Powergrid has engineers on the scene to restore supplies.
