A man who had to be cut free from his car following a crash is in a stable condition in hospital.
The 56-year-old driver had to be freed from a Honda Jazz after is collided with a VW Passat in Washington.
The accident happened at around 7.15pm last night in the Oxclose Road area of Columbia and firefighters used cutting equipment to rescue the man who was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Northumbria Police said today the injured man was stable and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
The driver of the VW Passat sustained minor injuries.
Investigations are under way into the causes of the crash and any witnesses are asked to call Northumbria Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
