Warning signs of abuse to be message of women's day

A team of students will pass on a message to their peers about how to spot the warning signs of abuse in their relationships as part of International Women's Day.

East Durham Trust aims to educate young people about healthy relationships and warn them of signs of domestic abuse through Wednesday’s event.

The East Durham Domestic Abuse Network, supported by the trust, is hosting the project.

The event has been designed by East Durham College students, with the audience to bring together their peers as they perform a rolling show at the college in Willerby Grove, Peterlee.

The first performance will start at 10.30am and will be repeated in hourly slots, with visitors welcome to attend the first show.

The sessions will showcase performances ranging from interactive drama pieces, music, spoken word and dance, with some of the pieces created specifically by the college in partnership with Harbour and Durham Constabulary.

Afterwards, the students will have the chance to talk to those who can offer support and further information.

There will also be a listening booth, where they can record what they will change in their lives because of the issues raised around the day.

Lindsey Wood, chairman of the network, said: “This is a great opportunity for us to raise the profile of women’s issues and highlight some of the services available locally.”

The network is a partnership project funded by police, crime and victims’ commissioner Ron Hogg in association with County Durham Community Association.
