Warning as pockets of heavy fog hit North East roads

Police forces and councils have issued warnings as pockets of heavy fog lie on the region's roads.

Traffic officers are urging motorists to ensure they are driving at a speed which means they can stop in a a distance that is clear.

Stretches of the A19, A1 and A167 are among those affected, with slow-moving traffic in some places.

The Met Office said the patchy fog, which is very dense in some places, will gradually clear with some dry, bright or sunny spells expected - though this afternoon may see cloud increase. The maximum temperature is expected to be 10°C.

The highest temperatures will be across western areas, while coastal areas remain noticeably cooler as a light onshore breeze develops.

Tonight, some places will start the evening clear, but gradually a mixture of mist, low cloud and hill fog is likely to spread westwards across the region to reach most places.

Tuesday is predicted to be generally dull and cloudy with only limited brightness.

Fog, and perhaps drizzle, is possible over high ground and along the coast. Highest temperatures in the west, coastal areas feeling cooler. The maximum temperature is predicted to be 9 °C.
