Officers are advising vehicle owners in the Fulwell and Roker areas of the city to remember to lock their vehicles when they park up overnight.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Phil Smailes said: "We want to make people aware of these thefts and remind them to keep their vehicles secure, especially when they park up overnight.

"It only takes seconds to remember to take any valuables with you and then to make sure you lock up. We know opportunist thieves will chance their luck by trying car doors to see if they have been left unlocked and will slip inside and steal anything left on seats or in the glove box.

"We're doing everything we can to identify thieves in the area and extra patrols are taking place at key times to deter thieves.

"Most thieves look for easy pickings - so don't make it easy for them.

"We'd also ask people to be vigilant and if they see anyone acting suspiciously around parked vehicles where they live to call police straightaway. You could help to prevent a crime or help us catch a thief."

To report suspicious behaviour, or pass on information about the recent thefts, contact police on 101.
