HAYFEVER sufferers are in for a bad time as pollen counts around the country reach high levels today.

There is a “moderate” warning for the North East today and tomorrow while levels reach “very high” around the country.

The warning drops to a “low” for the North East on Friday, rising to “moderate” again on Saturday, according to Met Office forecasts.

One in five people in the UK suffer from hayfever, with different pollens setting off symptoms in individual sufferers.

The pollen count season is normally March to August. However, it can start as early as January and end as late as November.

The pollen season separates into three main sections:

•Tree pollen – late March to mid-May.

•Grass pollen – mid-May to July.

•Weed pollen – end of June to September
