Warning about phone hoaxers

A WARNING has been issued after fraudsters targeted householders by promising to slash their energy bills.

The concerns have been raised by Durham County Council’s Fair Trading Team, which has become aware of the telephone scam where hoaxers promise to help people save 40 per cent on costs.

A caller, claiming to be using a secure phone line, asks for credit card or bank details so the product can be sent out by post.

The council says it is a sophisticated scam which has been happening in other parts of the country.
