Students at a city school had the chance to talk to a Second World War veteran about his memories.
Year 8 and 9 students at Sunderland High School were privileged to meet George Waller, 94, when he paid a visit to the Mowbray Road school.
Mr Waller was stationed in Italy for 8 years and was a member of the RAF.
The pensioner told the young people stories about his time there, including how he joined the RAF at the age of 18 and by the time he left he spoke fluent Italian.
He told the students that his role was ground control and he didn’t like to talk about the actual combat side of war.
One of the students said: “It was really interesting to hear all the stories from the war so many years ago, and to hear them from someone who was actually there.
“He mentioned how he didn’t just make friends in the RAF - they became his friends for life.”
