A RECRUITMENT drive to boost the ranks of a volunteer police team is entering its final days.

People considering signing up to Durham Constabulary’s “specials” are being reminded that they have until Friday at 5pm to apply.

The application form to join the Special Constabulary is available for download on the force website www.durham.police.uk under the Joining Us section.

Members of the Special Constabulary must complete a minimum of 16 hours service a month and a variety of roles are available to them.

During a three-month period earlier this year Durham’s 80 Special Constables contributed over 4,800 volunteer hours, with more than 20,000 hours recorded throughout the last financial year.

Application forms must be downloaded and printed out.

They can be sent in the post to police headquarters at Aykley Heads or delivered to headquarters reception by hand Monday to Friday between 7.45am and 5.15pm. They will not be accepted outside those hours and cannot be dropped in at police stations.

Only the first 500 applications will be considered and if more than 500 are received before Friday, no further applications will be accepted and a note will appear on the website to say the process has closed.

Information about eligibility criteria is given on the website and further information is available from the personnel and health services team on 375 2123.
