THE high winds have taken their toll on Wearside.

A section of Nile Street, in Sunderland city centre, was closed to traffic after gales tore down part of the roof of a derelict garage on the street.

Fire crews, police and council workers were called to the building at about 6.20pm yesterday to secure it and put measures in place to prevent any further damage.

The road remained closed today.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Police were notified by the fire and rescue service of damage to the gable end of a disused building on Nile Street at 6.23pm yesterday.”
