Video shows 'superb' firefighters in action as they tackle blaze behind Sunderland shops

Firefighters have been praised for their quick response to a fire at the rear of shops in Sunderland.

Crews were called to the lane at the rear of Sea Road in Fulwell this afternoon.

John Wilson, who runs Fulwell Post Office, was one of those who raised the alarm and caught the incident on video.

“It was about twenty past one. There were two rubbish bins on fire out the back,” he said.

“One passer-by tried to tackle it with a fire extinguisher before the fire brigade arrived.

“They were superb, they were there in seconds.”

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “A crew from Marley Park Community Fire Station were called out at 13:18 to a rubbish fire near Fulwell Post Office.

“They left the scene at 13:36 after they had put the fire out using a hose reel.”
