A FORMER mayor’s home has been transformed into Sunderland’s newest church.

Bede Tower, which was built in 1851 for solicitor Anthony John Moore, who was Mayor of Sunderland from 1854-55, has been turned into a community and conference centre for Bethany City Church.

Bede Tower also hosts community groups and offers conferencing and meeting facilities. Pastor Dave Burke said: “The opening of Bede Tower is a new chapter in Bethany City Church’s life.

“It gives a welcoming building for our Sunday worship and other activities.

“By breathing life back into an unloved building, we are bringing Bede Tower into use for the whole community.”

Bede Tower has a range of meeting rooms, 250-seater theatre and sports hall. The refectory can seat 100.

Church support manager Peter Errington said: “We are very pleased with the range of services we can offer that are really opening up Bede Tower’s use to the whole community.”
