A ROMANTIC boyfriend who proposed to his bride-to-be on the side of his dad’s removal van has married his sweetheart in a Christmas wedding in Las Vegas.
James Smallwood decided to tie the knot with bride Tanya, 28, after travelling to Nevada to celebrate James’s 30th birthday, only telling their parents they were planning their big day.
They said: “The engagement was quirky and exciting and we wanted our wedding to be just as unique and surprising and where better than Vegas.
“The hardest part was keeping it a secret. It was the happiest day of our lives.”
In July the Echo reported how Nissan worker James recruited his dad Mel to help him pop the question, unveiling a huge message to Tanya, who lives in Grindon, on the side of his truck.
Mel, who runs Mel Smallwood & Son Removals and Storage in Springwell, jumped at the chance to help his son stage a memorable proposal.
James had arranged to meet Tanya when she finished work in Sunderland city centre as Mel parked up the truck, clad in a huge banner, in Mowbray Road.
Tanya, who works for employment service Connexions, said at the time: “I was absolutely gobsmacked. I am overwhelmed with the response from people in Sunderland tooting their horns, taking pictures and asking to hear the full story.”
James’s sister Susan Chapman said: “They completely kept the wedding a surprise from all their family and friends apart from confiding in both sets of parents. We are all so thrilled and happy for them both.”
