Van demolishes post box as snow blankets North East roads

The accident in Station Town, East Durham, was one of many this morning as snow caused a headache for drivers.

Motorists faced long delays, with both major and local routes hit by the bad weather.

Council and highways chiefs have been taking flak on social media over gritting, but some have responded by saying heavy rain had washed away treatments.

The Met Office is not forecasting further snow for today, but has warned wintry conditions will continue.
