UPDATED: Tesco announces end of 24-hour opening hours at 76 stores - most North East branches spared

Supermarket giant Tesco is axing 24 hour shopping at more than 70 of its stores - about one in six of branches which currently open around the clock.

The company says hours will be reduced at 76 stores around the country "to improve the shopping experience for customers."

Tesco said the move will mean staff have more time to stock shelves, improving availability of products and the appearance of the stores when they opening in the morning.

Impact on staff will be "minimal," according to the firm, with affected branches closing between midnight and 6am. Four hundred staff will be involved in the changes.

Tesco has now released a full list of stores which will see hours cut. Only two North East stores - Hexham in Northumberland and Ingleby Barwick in Stockton - will be affected by the changes.

It says it is "being responsive to the way customers want to shop" and "more efficient use of Tesco time and resources" will make savings for Tesco "which can be passed on to customers."

Tony Hoggett, retail director for Tesco, said: "We’re always thinking about how to serve our customers better in each of our stores and with the growth of online grocery shopping, these stores saw very few customers during the night.

“It makes much more sense for colleagues at those stores to focus on replenishing the shelves instead and making sure they’re fully stocked when they open their doors at 6am.

“We’ll continue to make changes in store in ways that will make shopping at Tesco a better experience for our customers, at the times they want to shop.”

The changes will take effect between March 14 and April 11 this year.

Tesco began 24-hour trading in 1996 and approximately 400 of its stores are open 24 hours a day.
