The A1 has fully reopened after a crash near Washington that left one man dead and another injured.

The southbound between Bowes Inclines at Eighton Lodge Roundabout and the A1231 was closed for several hours while police investigated the collision in which a car overturned.

A woman in her 20s has been arrested in connection with the collision and is helping police with their enquiries.

Emergency services were called at 5am on Sunday to the incident near the Angel of the North just before the A1231 turnoff.

The 24-year-old was taken to hospital in a critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Another man, aged 20, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police thanked motorists for their patience while the road was closed.

They are appealing for witnesses and asking any motorists on the A1 in the Dunston area earlier this morning to get in contact.

It’s believed a taxi was on the A1 at the time and may have witnessed the collision.

Anyone who saw the incident is asked to contact Northumbria Police on 101 extension 69191 quoting reference 238 180415.
